Luck is NOT on their side.

When a series of bizarre coincidences leaves a man bleeding out in an alleyway, the Ember Guard call on their secret weapon: a takeout-fueled nonbinary vampire and their werewolf partner who's more puppy than beast.

Grim knows Embervein like they know their own skeleton -- a little too well. They may have a knack for sorting out the arcane, but their freak ability to see every body's bony insides has left Grim hiding from the one thing they really crave. If they can’t learn to accept their unique talents -- and the friendship of a good wolf -- how will they be able solve this mystery before someone else gets hurt...or worse?

The Ember Bones novellas feature an honest depiction of platonic intimacy, thrilling mysteries, and happy endings galore. Sink your teeth into this cozy modern fantasy.

Really enjoyed this cozy mystery/fantasy! I really loved that it featured a platonic relationship which I don’t see in books that often. The characters and world building were engaging. Be sure to read book 2!

Cozy fantasy mystery is a genre that I adore and that is way underrepresented. This scratches the itch and does a fabulous job with a non romantic love story to boot.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a cozy (aka a focus on improving relationships, a happy ending, and not too much bad stuff) that has a mystery included in a fantasy setting. The world building is very cool and I'd love to learn more about all of it! The book is short, so thank goodness there is a sequel! The characters are very real, and there's lots of queerness, neurodivergency, and a focus on reconciliation rather than revenge or harsh justice. Grimm definitely resonates if you or someone you know has trauma and difficulty making friends (feels rather Autistic, even if not openly stated). The friendship between Grimm and Argyle develops really well and isn't overly perfect. Just... real.

As a note, the book does end with a cliffhanger hook for the second book. If you want an absolute stand-alone book, this won't be that, but together the two books are a good reading length.

Absolute favourite book, I cannot recommend it enough. I love the cozy vibes and the characters, with the relationships and worldbuilding just making it a beautiful story. I love how Argyle and Grim's friendships is shown - especially as a fellow aromantic person :)
